My EMDR Therapy Training
I am a certified EMDR therapist, credentialed by the EMDR International Association. EMDR Certification is a higher designation of credential than the more common designation of EMDR trained. The difference in the quality of credentialing is in the amount of supervised practice that the therapist is required to receive.
EMDR is widely considered the therapy of choice for individuals suffering the emotional impact of adverse past events like childhood and adult abusive relationships, tragic accidents, victimization, sudden loss of a loved one and other traumas.
These individual trauma therapies are meant to improve the client’s ability to cope with the experience of adverse past events.
EMDR is a protocol. For the protocol to be effective, it needs to be administered correctly. This requires repetition and oversite. Working with a certified EMDR therapist ensures that your therapist has completed enough supervised training to make certain that the protocol is being administered appropriately and effectively.
Attachment Focused EMDR Therapy
My subspecialty is Attachment Focused EMDR therapy. This is based on the work of EMDR pioneer, Laurel Parnell. Attachment Focused EMDR is a particular style that focuses on the interpersonal impacts of trauma. Essentially, traumatic experiences can significantly influence how we relate to others. Often, when we experience abuse, neglect, abandonment or severe criticism during childhood, these experiences will shape how we form relationships with others as an adult.
We may find that it is difficult to trust people, or that we engage in unhealthy patterns of relationships that are reminiscent of dysfunction from our families of origin. Reprocessing these experiences and circumstances that led to our current reality can help us to redefine how we connect with others, so that we may enjoy better relationships with friends, family, intimate partners, and co-workers.
